How to Make Bias Binding Tape Using Just 1 Pin

April 21, 2015 By: Chris Lucascomment

Today’s post the 3rd tutorial on How to Make Your Own Bias Binding which is the first part of my Bias Binding Series.

I’ll be showing you How to make Bias Binding Tape Using Just 1 Pin

How to make your own perfect bias binding using just one pin

Coming up next in my Bias Binding Series I’ll be showing you How to Make Your Own Bias Binding Tape Using No Pins or Tolls and then we’ll be moving on to the How to Sew Bias Binding series of tutorials where I’ll be sharing a variety of ways to sew bias binding to finish seam edges.

Be sure to sign up for my newsletter so you don’t miss out as these are going to be great and you’ll be able to sew bias binding onto so many projects in a variety of ways.

Here’s an example of where I’ve used bias binding for my next sewing pattern that’s coming out soon.

Ok… Lets have some fun and make some bias binding.

How to Make Bias Binding Tape Using Just 1 Pin

All you need is 1 sewing pin, a tape measure or ruler, your bias cut fabric strip, and your iron.

My bias cut fabric strip is 1″ wide which is going to make a 1/2″ single fold bias binding strip and when folded again it will become a 1/4″ double fold bias binding strip.

My first Bias Binding post shows you how to cut your fabric to make your bias binding strips.  You can find it by clicking here or on the fabric strips image below.

Continue Cutting Bias Strips at a 45 degree angle for the amount you need for your projectFirst thing we need to do is insert the pin into the iron board like I have in the image below.  As I’m making 1/2″ wide bias binding tape the space between where the pin has been inserted needs to be 1/2″ wide.  If you were making 1″ wide bias binding tape then you would need to leave a gap of 1″ underneath the pin.

One-Pin-Placed-into-Ironing-boardFold both sides of the bias fabric strip in towards the centre to help get the folds started and then gently guide it under the pins as shown below.

Fold-side-of-Bias-Fabric-Strip-and-thread-through-under-pin-Once fabric strip is under the pin gently pull the fabric through about an 1″ or so at a time and press as you go.  You may need to give the folds a little helping hand to form as you gently pull the fabric through.  Be sure not to pull the fabric too hard as it’s cut on the bias and can easily stretch which would make it narrower than we want it to be.

All you need to do now is repeat the steps above and you’ll have some perfect bias binding tape you can use in your sewing project.
